WHAT IS GERMANY
A video program of Projektraum LS43, Berlin

The video program is curated by Jos Diegel, co-founder of Berlin’s off-space Projektraum LS43. He curated a Germany based video art program in two parts, WHAT IS GERMANY (I & II) for the two windows of Projektraum LS43 and the cooperation partners FLUCA, Plovdiv/Bulgaria and Sporobole, Sherbrooke/Canada.

The program’s approach is set not by the constructed idea of the artst’s natonality, origin or language. Geographically, the individuals presented are shaping cultural perspectves and manifestng statements from the landmarks defned as Germany.

These artworks mark highlights within streams of digital populism and propaganda, which are emphasized by the program’s title, counterfeiting the foundation of a fictional art movement.

As an artist himself, Jos Diegel selected video art from his wide ranged network of Germany based male and female artists from different generations, that conceptually use the discipline of video art. The program introduces pioneers, colleagues, experimenters, collaborators, friends, inspirers, professionals, representatives and emerging artists – respectively artists that influence, inspire, teach, surprise the curator himself.

The program has been formed by means of diversity of video, film, animation and various techniques and combines selected artistic communications of moving images that identify influences on perception of the development of Germany’s artist film genre. All artists’ works rely on a passion for non-linear, post-dramatic, anti-narrative presentation of themes and topics and portray an approach of their media to engage ideas, visions, critics, questions and thoughts.

Most of the protagonists are also engaged in different fields and so achieve their crafts in disciplines as performance and intervention, feature and short film, installation arts and painting, post-internet and graphic design, image and sound engineering and others. All listed artists are actively showing and presenting their works in exhibitions, screenings, festivals nationally and internationally.
